We've heard this a million times now and you might have also:

Mobile devices have evolved to use the net more and there are more portable devices than desktops etc. In fact there are numerous reasons why two, three word and even four or more word domains are actually worth multiple times more than they were even a year ago. Here I outline some of the ways that the old domain space is meeting with all that is new in the domain space. Most of this is really aimed at company and business owners who are genuinely attempting to set a course on a path that includes internet domain name ownership on a relatively more serious level than most - so I make no apology as to the length of the following:
Q: Is it cheaper in the long run to secure your secondary names and related domains now, rather than having to take court action after you've noticed that your names are being used (in bad faith or so you think) by someone else?
Q: Is it better in the long run to secure good generic domain names and country code top level names around your business now, rather than discovering later that there are no good names left?
Realistically, to both questions:
A: Yes - and for many reasons.
Now, on to some serious background: Not every Universal Dispute Resolution Process nor Cease and Desist nor subpoena suceeds and often for good reasons. Also, if you attempt to wrestle a domain away from someone else and fail (this is becoming a more clear-cut area) you may even find yourself facing even more serious charges in return for a wrongful action, along with massive damages lumped on top. By pushing your luck in this way you may awake a sleeping giant with a very different view of the ownership of "your" name. A party making tens of millions a year will think nothing of making an example of a person or company who would sully their reputation in that way. Further, they may like nothing more than to gloat publicly over their victory once they have made your failed action into an industry laughing stock - and more importantly, made their position more secure by adding more victories to their legal team's list of precedents. It's an area both sides of such actions would best do well to avoid. Very large investors including some of the largest companies in the world have taken their domain ownership very, very seriously over the last decade and there are recent successful court actions against "reverse domain hi-jackers" which should make you think twice about expecting to be able to "get your domain" back through the courts.
Domains don't always work the same way that you might expect. You might think you have a right to a name just like a million others will. Unless you have an existing renowned trademark on something you can't expect to own the right to a domain registered by another party. What about brand recognition and reach outside of the locale of the name owner's natural market or even society? These figure in the equation. How would anyone know about your mark in Australia if they live and operate in New York? If there are other companies there, or in Japan or the UK, in the EU or Tombouctou- who all do the same thing as you - you see, your mark and claim may not make it past even one of the first several qualifying notions contained within the UDRP process - you may not have as much right to a domain name as you might think even if you have other IP that you've spent thousands on building up - even if you have a smart sounding legal advisor who pats your back and tells you you'll win. Many results of UDRP actions have run contrary to the most competent legal advice, let alone the advice of a lawyer from outside the field - plus, the decisions are often based on the deliberations of a divided panel which could vote either way on a resolution - it can be precarious and made moreso by a history of conflicting precedents - the law is new and still evolving - think about that - how many peopl are there in the whole world? Why would you, even in Italy, have more right to a pizza industry related domain name than a pizza business in Hawaii? Why would even a Silicon Valley company have more rights to a chip related name than an Asian, UK or EU PC component company? Etc etc etc. Honestly, if I had a dollar for every person I've explained this to, that it's been the first time they've even thought of that at all, I wouldn't even need to own domains, I'd be so flush! Be honest: How many people, companies and businesses are there do you think, with similar markets and products, names and services - even place-names as yours? It's a whole mess of crazy IP chaos out there - and again, it's truly best to avoid tackling your domain needs down the track from a predatory "win them in court" mentality - from any way you look at it. There's a long and growing list of idiots of the century who have set an example already.
Eg: Let us say that you deal in antiques.. what better name to have than "antiques.com"? Not only is it collectible, it describes your industry - plus, it itself will be an antique of sorts someday - quite an odd self-fulfilling notion. Some buy names like others buy art. But back to business; Can you think how many serious antique enquiries must pass through that domain every day? Do you have a right to that name? No more so than your million other competitors. I think that if you've read this far, you probably get it. Once a domain that you could use (or worse, need) is gone to another party who is equally entitled to it, that is the end of that. If you ever want that name, you will have to pay for it or wait for years to see if it ever expires - in which case other parties might just as easily enter the picture. That's not just so much baloney - it's reality. Sure, you might get by and survive (I'm not suggesting you won't) but what better way to add to your bottom line, if you are a serious investor, than by owning a highly sought after asset class which not only directly brings you business
(without having to change what you're doing day to day) - an asset class which has done nothing
but rise in value since inception more than a decade ago. Domain names are foundational to the internet. If you own the right domain names you naturally lessen your reliance on search traffic and paid advertising. Owning the right domains puts you squarely into the 21st century - in the same way that owning railroads made massive fortunes - the same way that buying railroad stations assures that you are more likely to win at Monopoly. Seriously, some game theorists will tell you that you have more chances of winning Monopoly if you own one or more railroad blocks. Why? Because they cost very little, they immediately pay out better than utilities or undeveloped blocks and they're landed on quite more often than other blocks because players are sent "to the nearest station" when they pick up community chest cards etc. The similarity with domain names is, although odd seeming, arguably very true. If you're a company with a large war-chest of marketing funds looking for a home, you can do little better than to allocate a balanced percentage towards buying tracts of high quality, targeted domains which focus users and other valuable attention onto your business. This is an area that could be attempted by non-marketing people. It could also be attempted by non-internet-savvy people. It is also something which is a

The end result for the consumer and the providors of this technology would be immesurable in more ways than just dollars. It would target a great demand around the very problems I seek to relieve.
